General Law Enforcement Instructor

Before becoming an instructor with the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy, Curtis L. Pote served as a Police Officer for 15 years.  Curtis began his law enforcement career with the Muscatine Police Department in 1998.  He served the City of Muscatine for 3 years until moving to Ankeny and served as a police officer for 12 years.  While at the Ankeny Police Department, Curtis served in many roles including Field Training Officer, Defensive Tactics Instructor, Less Lethal Instructor, Bicycle Patrol Officer Instructor, Narcotics Investigator and Sergeant.

Curtis grew up in Guthrie County and graduated from Guthrie Center High School.  He then attended Truman State University and received a Bachelor of Science in Justice Systems.  After moving to Ankeny, Curtis attended Drake University and earned a Masters in Public Administration.

Since 2005, Curtis has served as an adjunct instructor at Des Moines Area Community College.  He has instructed several courses including Introduction to Criminal Justice, Juvenile Law, Ethics in Law Enforcement, Criminal Law, Criminal Investigation, Police and Society, and Survey of Criminal Justice.

 

At the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy, Curtis is an instructor in the areas of Precision Driving, Interviews and Investigation, Verbal Judo, Bicycle Patrol, Physical Training and Defensive Tactics.

 

Curtis is married to his high school sweetheart, Melissa and together they have three wonderful children; Isabella, Landon and Lucianna.
